Big Day Out at the Wollongong Baking Show

Kim’s trip up the coast — carting fresh sourdough loaves to the local awards (and coming home with more award-winning sourdough accolades).

7.30 am, Ulladulla

The bakers have been here since the wee hours. The delivery drivers are doing the rounds after stocking up the shop. And this is when I pop in to the warehouse — our hub of all baking activity — to grab a few of the best-looking sourdough loaves for today’s big awards day. We’re going in pretty positive and hopeful after taking home the ribbons in previous years (including Champion Loaf of the Show in 2023 and 2024).

9.30 am, Wollongong

After driving up the highway, I make it to the Wollongong TAFE Baking section and walk our loaves in. We submit seven entries in total in the flavoured, savoury, white loaf and baguette categories; Olive + Herb Loaf, Seedy House Loaf, House Loaf, Fruit Loaf and Baguette met their criteria. Overall, 60 individual bakeries entered — clocking in 270 products for judgment.

11 am, Wollongong

It’s a long wait for the awards announcement, so it’s time to visit the Miller’s Local Bakehouse warehouse and Kembla St stores to try a delicious morning bun. Big fan.

3 pm, Wollongong
